Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat, Op. 107;
Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op. 35. Audiofon. |
| The latest from Miami's Audiofon label, and a winner. William De Rosa's dark, cushiony tone is a major asset in the First Cello Concerto, and he probes the mysterious beauty of the slow movement beautifully. He receives competent but too distantly miked support from the Ekaterinburg Philharmonic. The real attraction of this CD, though, is the audacious playing of Valentina Lisitsa in the First Piano Concerto, one of the most freshly phrased, free-wheeling, bravura performances of the piece I've heard. The orchestra, despite a couple of unfortunate slips of intonation and the slight remoteness from the soloist, seems a remarkably fine regional Russian ensemble, and Viatcheslav Chichennikov plays the big trumpet solo with glistening security. |
